“Take only what you need and utilize everything you harvest from nature”
For us sustainability is all about respecting nature and safeguarding that there will be resources available also for future generations.
CodMarine® is a modern version of Cod Liver Oil where we use all trimmings from food production of cod, not only the liver. We believe that we need to utilize everything we harvest from nature so there will be enough EPA and DHA for the world’s growing population.
CodMarine® is certified as sustainable by both Friend of the Sea (FoS) and Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). Through the certifications MSC and FoS endorses that fisheries supplying raw material to CodMarine® work under the environmental standard for sustainable fishing conditions.
The abundance of Cod has been a profound influence on the rise of settlements in our coastal areas. Since the Viking age, 1000 years ago, Norwegians have exported products based on Cod. We see the importance of fishing in a sustainable way to make sure there will be enough Cod also for future generations. In addition to sustainable fishing practices we believe we should utilize everything that is harvested. We have contracts with several fishing vessels (the CodMarine® fleet) that are fishing cod in the Barents Sea. The fish is processed onboard and the trimmings from the production of food for human consumption are processed into fish oil and fishmeal. Pharma Marine™ collects this first stage oil from the fishing vessels approximately every 4-6 weeks during the whole year as long as the quotas are not finished. Our engagement to buy the raw materials from the boats helps fishermen to utilize the whole catch.
Marine Stewardship Council
The Marine Stewardship Council is an international non-profit organisation. They recognise and reward efforts to protect oceans and safeguard seafood supplies for the future.
To secure sustainability, it is important to have control of by-catch and that the stocks are not overexploited to secure that there always will be resources available for the coming generations. Norway’s offshore Northeast Arctic (NEA) cod, saithe and haddock fisheries were certified 28th of April 2010 as sustainable under the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) environmental standard for sustainable and well managed fisheries.
The fisheries comprise of a wide variety of boats from large trawlers to smaller vessels using a mixture of fishing gear including trawls, longlines, Danish seines, hand lines and gill nets to catch cod, saithe and haddock.
The quota for Cod is decided every year in the fall between Norway and Russia. The decision is based on advice from The Council for the Exploration of the Sea and the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research.
MSC’s mission is to use the ecolabel and fishery certification program to contribute to the health of the world’s oceans by recognising and rewarding sustainable fishing practices, influencing the choices people make when buying seafood and working with partners to transform the seafood market to a sustainable basis.
– So that you can enjoy the seafood you love today, tomorrow and always
Friend of the SeA
Friend of the Sea is a non-profit organization whose mission is the conservation of the marine habitat. The products and their origins are audited onsite by independent international certification bodies. Friend of the Sea is present worldwide and more than 300 companies have their products certified to prove that the origin of their products is produced from sustainable fisheries.
To be certified by Friend of the Sea means – amongst other things- that the fisheries will not overexploit the fish stock, have a low limit for discarding fish remains as well as clear rules for waste management. When using the Friend of the Sea certification you are contributing to the health of oceans by assessing and promoting sustainable fishing practices. This is a clear preference and basic philosophy of Pharma Marine™.
